Is kevlar cloth better then fiberglass cloth ?

Kevlar cloth is often considered superior to fiberglass cloth in certain applications due to its unique combination of properties. Here's a breakdown of why Kevlar might be the better choice depending on your needs:

🛡️ Strength and Durability

  • Kevlar has a much higher tensile strength than fiberglass, meaning it can withstand greater pulling forces without breaking.
  • It’s also more impact-resistant, making it ideal for ballistic protection (e.g., body armor) and high-stress environments.
  • Kevlar is flexible and doesn’t become brittle over time, unlike some fiberglass composites.

🔥 Heat Resistance

  • Fiberglass can tolerate higher temperatures (up to ~800°F), making it better for insulation and thermal applications3.
  • Kevlar, while slightly less heat-resistant (~450°C), maintains its strength and integrity under high heat, especially when coated with silicone.

⚖️ Weight and Density

  • Kevlar is lighter than fiberglass, which is crucial in aerospace, sporting gear, and protective clothing where weight matters.

🧪 Chemical and Abrasion Resistance

  • Kevlar, especially when silicone-coated, offers excellent resistance to chemicals and abrasion, making it suitable for harsh environments.
  • Fiberglass is also chemically resistant but more prone to surface wear and cracking under stress.

💰 Cost and Workability

  • Fiberglass is significantly more affordable and easier to work with, making it ideal for large-scale construction and marine applications2.
  • Kevlar is more expensive and harder to cut or bond with resins, which can increase manufacturing complexity.

Kevlar shines in high-performance, lightweight, and protective applications, while fiberglass is a go-to for cost-effective, heat-tolerant, and structural uses. Want help choosing between them for a specific project?

Kevlar® tape is ideal for selective reinforcement of Kevlar®, fiberglass or carbon lamination's and repairs.

Kevlar® Fabric – When Strength Meets Possibility

You’re not just buying a material—you’re investing in performance, protection, and peace of mind. Whether you're building the next race-winning kayak, reinforcing an aircraft fuselage, or crafting sporting equipment that pushes limits, Kevlar® Fabric is your quiet powerhouse.

Why it Feels Right for You:

Imagine holding a material that's lighter than E-glass, yet stronger than steel—not metaphorically, but literally. It’s the kind of confidence you can feel in your hands. Whether you're in your workshop or out on the water, you’ll know that what you’ve built is made to endure, perform, and impress.

And when things heat up—literally—Kevlar® holds its own. It withstands temperatures up to 320°F without losing strength, won’t melt, won’t burn, and only starts to caramelize at around 800°F. That’s not just durable—that’s peace of mind.

Built for More:

Kevlar® Tape’s thermal and dimensional stability means your work stays true to form over time. It's compatible with Polyester, Vinyl Ester, and Epoxy Resins, making it adaptable for whatever your project demands. From wind turbines to pressure vessels, the applications are as limitless as your ambition.

And while Kevlar® is sensitive to direct UV light, it’s been proven to stay strong when indirectly exposed, so your long-term projects won't break down when left in the sun.

Real Strength. Real Stories.

At Rayplex, we know the hours you spend crafting, cutting, shaping—it's more than work. It's passion. That's why we only supply First Quality Kevlar®, held to consistent, high standards, so every yard you use feels just as strong, just as reliable, as the last.

Pro tip: Cutting Kevlar® can be tough—we’ve got the solution. Use our specially-designed Serrated Scissors or go electric with the WBT-115V Portable Cutter for clean, precise cuts—because your tools should work as hard as your material does.

Whether you’re an engineer, a builder, or a dreamer, Kevlar® Fabric is your edge—the kind that makes your next project stronger, lighter, and made to last.

Features include:

  • Excellent thermal & dimensional stability
  • Performs with no strength loss up to temperatures of 320°F for extended periods.
  • Lighter in weight than E-Glass with specific strengths.
  • Sensitive to direct exposure from UV light; however, demonstrates little or no change in a composite when it is indirectly exposed to UV light.
  • Will not melt or support combustion, however, it will begin to caramelize at approximately 800°F
  • Kevlar® Tapes are compatible with Polyester, Vinyl Ester, and Epoxy Resins.

Common applications for KEVLAR includes 49 fabrics such as: kayaks, canoes, high-speed boats, aircraft fuselage panels, pressure vessels, sporting equipment, wind turbines and much more.

Kevlar® is a material formed by combining para-phenylenediamine and terephthaloyl chloride. Aromatic polyamide (aramid) threads are the result. They are further refined, by dissolving the threads and spinning them into regular fibres. Kevlar® when combined with layers of resin results in a ‘rigid’ material that is light and has twenty times the strength of steel.

Rayplex is committed to ensuring that every roll of fabric we handle is First Quality and manufactured to the highest standards, so that you can expect the same properties and handling characteristics every time you order.
